Pinna, Johnston & Burwell, P.A. is pleased to announce that attorney Matthew (“Matt”) S. Black has been selected to the 2026 North Carolina Super Lawyers list, an honor reserved for lawyers who demonstrate excellence in practice. Only 5% of attorneys in North Carolina receive this distinction each year.
Since 1998, Matt has focused his law practice on representing families and closely held businesses in matters involving commercial real estate, corporate and business law, mergers and acquisitions, and estate planning and administration. He has extensive experience structuring, negotiating, and drafting commercial leases, loan transactions, commercial real estate acquisitions, and tax-deferred exchanges, and he frequently serves as outside general counsel to closely held businesses across a wide range of industries and professional practices.
“Matt’s selection to Super Lawyers reflects what our clients experience every day — trusted counsel, deep subject-matter expertise, and a steady, practical approach to solving complex business and real estate issues,” said the firm’s leadership at Pinna, Johnston & Burwell, P.A.
Matt is a Raleigh native and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Engineering with distinction in 1995, and Wake Forest University School of Law, where he received his J.D. in 1998 and served on the Wake Forest Law Review. He has been recognized previously by his peers as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers, one of North Carolina’s Legal Elite in Business North Carolina, and has been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America®.
In addition to his legal practice, Matt remains active in the community through service in his church and on the boards of various local nonprofit organizations.
